Mahmood Khan - The King Of Sufi
Some music forms entertain us; some make us groove, and then there are some that touch us deep within our heart. It is correctly said that when we are happy, we enjoy the music; and when we are upset, we understand the lyrics. One such form of music is Sufi music. Widely accepted and loved mainly in Asian countries, Sufism has now spread as a culture all over the world. The credit for this goes to many Asian artists such as Mahmood Khan.
Mahmood Khan comes from an ordinary background in Pakistan, the country known as the Hub of Sufi music. Pakistan has given artists such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Mahmood Khan, who widened the scope of this genre of music all over the globe.
Mahmood Khan has given music in almost all genres of music. Not only this, he is also acclaimed with the honor for giving birth to today’s most loved genres of music, The Modern Funk and the Hip Hop.
Sufi music is in the blood and genes of Khan. He has given hits such as “Ajnabi, Agar, and Tere Beghair”, all representing Sufi. There is no doubt Khan has given great contribution in popularizing Sufism in western countries like the USA and Australia.
Sufi Music was initially brought to Australia by artists like Sharif Jansen, who also established the organization ‘Sufi Movement in Australia’ (SMIA). It was back in 1950’s that the western culture got exposed to this genre of music. Not only this, they also embraced it with open arms and appreciated the artists of this genre. After Jansen’s death in 1990, this movement is still going strong and has established centers in other western countries as well. This SMIA is currently very active in Australia and the USA and releases a weekly journal called “Spirit Matters”. This is one of the most loved journals in the west.
Next generation artists such as Mahmood Khan are deeply involved in keeping the popularity of Sufi music alive in the western countries. When Khan performs, his fans say that there is an aura of ultimate divinity that touches their mind, body, and soul, inside out. Undoubtedly, Khan is a man of morals who has still remained grounded to his roots and is still the most successful cross-over artist.
